03 Renewables
Energy thinking built in, not bolted on.
Solar PV, battery storage, heat pumps and EV charging are most useful when they are considered against the building's real demand and design.
Begin with demand, not equipment
Every new home has its own roof form, plant strategy, electrical supply and operational profile. A technology may look promising on a drawing, but the right specification depends on what the building needs throughout a day—and across the year.
We look at renewable and lower-carbon systems as part of the wider mechanical and electrical package. This helps surface the practical interfaces: roof space, electrical capacity, heat distribution, controls, access and the space needed for safe installation and maintenance.
Solar PV
Roof orientation, shading, usable area, roof access and expected daytime demand shape the opportunity. The roof and electrical design should leave room for a sensible installation and future maintenance.
Battery storage
Storage needs to be assessed against generation, the building's demand pattern, operating strategy and appropriate equipment location. It is not automatically the right addition to every scheme.
Heat pumps
Heat pumps belong in a whole-system discussion: heat loss, distribution temperatures, hot-water requirements, external unit siting, noise and electrical provision all influence the design.
EV charging
Staff, visitors and fleet needs may differ. The number, location and future expandability of charging points need to be weighed against site circulation and available electrical capacity.
What to establish before choosing a system
Understand likely loads
Use the building design, occupancy assumptions and proposed mechanical equipment to develop a credible view of demand. Modelled expectations should be checked against the final design.
Test the site constraints
Review roof form, shading, plant locations, external space, access and the electrical connection before setting a preferred arrangement.
Agree operating priorities
Discuss what the operator values most: comfort, manageable controls, future charging capacity, maintenance access and how the system will be monitored.
Coordinate the interfaces
Confirm how the proposed systems connect with electrical distribution, mechanical plant, building controls and the construction programme.
