Designing for a home that never closes
A new care home has many different environments under one roof: bedrooms, shared lounges, kitchens, corridors, offices and spaces where care is delivered. They do not all have the same temperature, air movement or hot-water needs.
Mechanical design begins by understanding how those spaces will be used, when demand occurs and how the building fabric influences the load. Decisions made here affect plant space, distribution routes, controls and the experience of residents and staff for years to come.

Heating
A suitable heat source and distribution approach are considered together, with room-by-room comfort, control and the wider energy strategy in view.
Hot water
Storage, recovery, circulation and peak-use patterns matter in a building with bathing, laundry and catering demands. Water hygiene requirements and the operator's procedures must be factored into the design.
Ventilation
Fresh air, extract and air movement are planned around each space's use. Access for cleaning and maintenance needs to be part of the layout, not an afterthought.
Cooling
Where cooling is needed, its location and controls should respond to comfort, noise, service access and the needs of residents who may be more sensitive to heat.
Controls
Zoning and understandable controls help teams operate the building day to day. The best technical scheme is only useful when the people on site can use it.
