Good systems need room to work.
The most useful decisions often happen before installation begins: when layouts, responsibilities and interfaces can still change.
Coordinate early. Avoid designing in isolation.
A care home's mechanical, electrical and renewable systems share space with the structure, the rooms and the people who will use them. A plant location can affect acoustics. A roof decision can affect solar potential. A late change to the kitchen or laundry can change loads elsewhere.
Our role within the agreed M&E and renewables scope is to work with the developer, architect, main contractor and operator so that those interfaces are visible. The wider design team's responsibilities and approvals remain important throughout.

Four useful moments to align

Before layouts settle
Share the proposed room schedule, occupancy, operator brief and early energy strategy. Reserve realistic space for plant, distribution and access.

As the design develops
Review loads, equipment positions, roof and external areas, electrical supply assumptions and the routes connecting systems across the building.

Before work on site
Agree design information, sequencing, responsibilities and coordination points with the main contractor and relevant trades.

As choices change
Revisit the impact of material changes to bedrooms, catering, laundry, plant or future EV charging before they become expensive surprises.

- Current plans, elevations and room schedule
- Building fabric and planning constraints
- Programme and procurement milestones
- Known utility information and site restrictions
From the future operator
- Intended occupancy and room use
- Kitchen, laundry and care equipment expectations
- Comfort preferences and control responsibilities
- Maintenance access and future expansion priorities
Information does not need to be perfect to start. Identifying what is still unknown is part of good coordination.
The earlier the conversation, the more useful it can be.
